Beautiful aspiring actor Cicely (Jake-ann Jones) has just landed her first major role, but there&#8217;s a big problem: it requires a nude scene. Before The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, long before Poltergeist, master of horror Tobe Hooper first forayed into weird and haunted houses in his very first feature, Eggshells (1969).

‍

Eggshells finds a group of young hippies shacking up in a sprawling house in the Austin, Texas summer of '69, talking about their lives and setting about various delinquencies. All the while, a strange presence is bubbling up in the basement, causing possible hallucinations, hiccups in space-time, and occasional disappearances.

‍

Considered lost until uncovered and restored in 2009, this sci-fi/fantasy hangout film announces much of what Hooper would concern himself with throughout his career, including the political undercurrents running through much of his iconic horror.

‍

Hooper here is at his most kaleidoscopic, fashioning a series of vignettes that oscillate between documentary-style realism and abstract experimentation, with an unbridled amateur spirit giving the film a cinematic laboratory quality.

Eggshells will be preceded by a 16mm print of Holographic Will (2023) by [Mike Stoltz](https://mikestoltz.org/), a whirling, experimental domestic portrait of destabilization during the struggle to stay in a rent-controlled apartment amidst the sale of a building and an affordable housing crisis.

About *Low Tide*:

Bearing traces of Huck Finn and Antoine Doinel, Low Tide’s nameless adolescent hero (Daniel Blanchard) runs errands and cares for his substance-abusing mother (Melissa McKinney). Roberto Minervini’s second feature casts nonprofessionals to magnificently truthful effect, and the writer/director demonstrates his characteristic sensitivity for small Texas towns and their resilient denizens. Blanchard is seldom off-screen, as Minervini follows him on his “rounds” from the nursing home where his mother works to a slaughterhouse, but also to the river to catch frogs and fish. Minervini does not mute the hardships of his protagonist’s life, nor does he deny him the right to be 12 years old.
About *Stop the Pounding Heart*:

Sara (Sara Carlson, playing herself) is part of a devout Christian goat-farming family with 12 children, all home-schooled and raised with strict moral guidance from the Scriptures. Set in a rural community that has remained isolated from technological advances and lifestyle influence—no phones, TVs, computers, or drunken-teen brawls—the subtly narrative film follows Sara and Colby, two 14-year-olds with vastly different backgrounds who are quietly drawn to each other. In Minervini’s intimate documentary-style portrait—the third in the Italian-born filmmaker’s Texas trilogy—Sara’s commitment to her faith is never questioned. It’s the power of the director’s nonintrusive handheld-camera style that reveals his protagonist’s spiritual and emotional inner turmoil about her place in a faith that requires women to be subservient to their fathers before becoming their husbands’ helpers. By also presenting an authentic, impartial portrayal of the Texas Bible Belt, Minervini allows humanity and complexity behind the stereotypes to show through.

Low Tide + Stop the Pounding Heart

*Pavements* is a movie about Pavement the band—among other things. The latest film from acclaimed director Alex Ross Perry (*Her Smell*) is a documentary that may or may not be entirely true, may or may not be totally sincere, and may or may not be more about the idea of the band—or any band—than a history of the short-lived, passionately loved, commercially marginal Nineties American alternative group Pavement. This unconventional film about a highly unconventional band incorporates a stage musical, rock biopic, gallery exhibition, archival footage, and contemporary observational footage to create a film as irreducible, uncharacterizable, and entertaining as the band and its music. Anchored by Pavement’s slacker-sage-sphinx, Stephen Malkmus, the film features performances by Joe Keery, Jason Schwartzman, Tim Heidecker, Kathryn Gallagher, Michael Esper and Zoe Lister-Jones, and editing by nonfiction innovator Robert Greene (*Procession*).

Turnstile: Never Enough is a forthcoming visual album by the American hardcore punk band Turnstile. This 60-minute film that serves as a companion piece to their upcoming fourth studio album, Never Enough, which is scheduled for release on June 6, 2025, via Roadrunner Records. The film is set to premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Festival. Directed by Turnstile&#8217;s frontman Brendan Yates and guitarist Pat McCrory, the visual album encompasses all 14 tracks from Never Enough. It aims to capture the band&#8217;s raw energy through striking cinematography and sound. The project marks the band&#8217;s first release featuring guitarist Meg Mills, who joined following the departure of founding member Brady Ebert in 2022. The film includes the title track &#8220;Never Enough,&#8221; as well as singles like &#8220;Seein’ Stars&#8221; and &#8220;Birds,&#8221; the latter featuring vocals by Paramore’s Hayley Williams and Blood Orange’s Devonté Hynes. These tracks have accompanying music videos directed by Yates and McCrory, which are expected to be part of the visual album.

One of the most searing romances of the 1990s, Wong Kar Wai’s emotionally raw, lushly stylized portrait of a relationship in breakdown casts Hong Kong superstars Tony Leung and Leslie Cheung as a couple traveling through Argentina and locked in a turbulent cycle of infatuation and destructive jealousy as they break up, make up, and fall apart again and again. Setting out to depict the dynamics of a queer relationship with empathy and complexity on the cusp of the 1997 handover of Hong Kong—when the country’s Lgbt community suddenly faced an uncertain future—Wong crafts a feverish look at the life cycle of a love affair that’s by turns devastating and deliriously romantic. Shot by ace cinematographer Christopher Doyle in both luminous monochrome and luscious saturated color, Happy Together is an intoxicating exploration of displacement and desire that swoons with the ache and exhilaration of love at its heart-tearing extremes.

SCARECROW IN A GARDEN OF CUCUMBERS (Robert J. Kaplan) is no ordinary ‘fish out of water’ story. Once feared as a ‘lost film’, it runs in the mold of other cult classics like Robert Downey Sr.’s PUTNEY SWOPE (1969), Tom Schiller’s NOTHING LASTS FOREVER (1984) and Timothy Carey’s THE WORLD’S GREATEST SINNER (1962) as a feverish live-action fairytale. The legendary Warhol Superstar and trans icon Holly Woodlawn plays Eve, who gets off the bus from New York City with ambition but finds herself in an urban fantasy where cursing nuns drive taxis and Chelsea Hotel bellboys wear gas masks. Robert J. Kaplan’s 1972 musical comedy is full of Old Hollywood callouts with characters having the names of Margo Channing, Eve Harrington, and Blanche DuBlois with musical numbers that are a cocktail of Broadway kitsch and Sesame Street. Woodlawn is unsurprisingly charismatic, carrying the film in its musical numbers and even donning male drag. Fellow New York legend Tally Brown (TALLY BROWN, NEW YORK (1979)) is also unforgettable in a supporting role. Thanks to a 2022 restoration by the Academy Film Archive, SCARECROW IN A GARDEN OF CUCUMBERS is ripe for rediscovery for today’s cinephiles.

_Ricerche: four_, 2024 is composed of interviews with three groups of LGBTQIA elders, filmed in Philadelphia, PA, Dowelltown, TN, and in Los Angeles, CA. Through joyful, illuminating, and deeply moving conversations, participants reflect on their relationships to community, family, activism, sex, sexuality, and the shifting political landscape. While not all participants identify as elders, each speaks from deep, lived experience that shapes their understanding of the social, political, and economic promises and possibilities — as well as the obstacles — facing them and their communities. These conversations make an inspired proposition for the importance of intergenerational collaboration, dialogue and care. _Ricerche: four_ is one part of a 4-part video series that steps off Pier Paolo Pasolini’s brilliant 1964 film, _Comizi d’Amore_, to stage a contemporary inquiry into the “sexual problem” in the US.

Sharon Hayes will be present for a post-screening conversation with participants from the film.

**Sharon Hayes** is an artist who works with video, performance, sound, and public sculpture to reveal the intersections of history, politics, and speech. Her work challenges reductive historical narratives and reactivates overlooked pathways for developing alternative understandings of today’s political landscape. Hayes’ practice engages in dialogue and collective resonance with a diverse range of actions, voices, and practices that resist normative behaviors, unjust social contracts, and rigid timelines—opening up new possibilities for how we live and relate to one another in the world.

Her work sustains a distinct and vital commitment to performance and to collaboration and is devoted to the radical possibilities of non-normative occupation of public space and in holding public space as a site for unpredictable and unregulated encounters. Hayes has had numerous solo exhibitions, including at the Andrea Rosen Gallery in New York (2014), the Tanya Leighton Gallery in Berlin (2013), the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York (2012), and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid (2012). Her work has also been exhibited at the Venice Biennale (2013), the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. She is the recipient of many awards and grants, including a Pew Fellowship (2016), a Guggenheim Fellowship (2014), the Alpert Award in Visual Arts (2013), an Anonymous Was a Woman Award (2013), and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Fellowship (2007). She currently teaches in the Weitzman School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania.

Mount Wilson Observatory and the Livonian Cinema welcome silent film historian and projectionist **Joe Rinaudo**, who will bring his 1909 hand-cranked 35-millimeter motion picture machine and a program of science fiction films, all from his personal collection. Movies will include Georges Méliès’ *Trip to the Moon* and Dave Fleischer’s *Koko’s Earth Control*, among other surprises. **Ed Torres**, house organist at the Bob Baker Marionette Theater, will provide music accompaniment on organ, and **Gary Gibson** will assist with film projection and the presentation of Magic Lantern slides prior to the show.

This matinee will include a brief intermission, during which movie-goers can see the projector up close. Don’t miss your chance to see these lovingly restored machines and movies up on the mountain!

On the cusp of fourteen, David Bowie-worshipping Christiane (Natja Brunckhorst) begins slipping out from under the watch of her divorced mother (Christiane Lechle) and spending time at hip discotheque Sound. There she falls in love with Detlev (Thomas Haustein), whose recent experiments with heroin soon have her hooked. Working with first-time actors and shooting on location with real-life regulars of Zoo Station’s notorious drug cruising scene, director Uli Edel unflinchingly captures the degradation of each phase of junkie life, from underage prostitution to brutal withdrawals to the seemingly endless vows to “go straight.” Bowie himself appears in a concert performance of “Station to Station”; the film’s soundtrack is a virtual compendium of the epochal musician’s celebrated “Berlin period” and a perfect sonic evocation of nightclubbing’s dark side.
