After spending 20 years in a psychiatric institution for the brutal axe murders of her husband and his mistress, Lucy Harbin (Joan Crawford) is finally released into the care of her daughter, Carol (Diane Baker). Returning to a life she barely recognizes proves unsettling enough, but when a series of grisly murders begins, old suspicions and new fears quickly surface. Produced and directed by William Castle from a screenplay by Psycho novelist Robert Bloch, STRAIT-JACKET is a deliciously lurid blend of psychological suspense, gothic horror, and dark humor, with Crawford commanding the screen as a woman whose grip on reality may be slipping once again. Castle surrounds Crawford and Baker with a colorful supporting cast, including George Kennedy, Leif Erickson, and Rochelle Hudson, while milking the story for shocks and sinister surprises. **“Help Yourself,” 1927, Dir. Joe Pasternak, 20 Mins, Dino Everett/USC, USA**

Long believed lost, “Help Yourself” (1927) stars Swedish-born comedian El Brendel as a hungry drifter whose search for a meal unexpectedly leads to romance. Produced by future Hollywood legends Joe Pasternak and William R. Wilkerson before either achieved fame, the film was never released, and its negative was eventually destroyed. Surviving elements, discovered more than ninety years later, have now been painstakingly reconstructed by USC HMH Foundation Moving Image Archive Curator Dino Everett and film collector Louie Despres, making this screening the first opportunity in nearly a century to experience this forgotten comedy.

The world premiere restoration of THE SLANDERERS (1924), a previously lost feature preserved from the only known surviving copy, a 16mm print recently discovered in the USC HMH Foundation Moving Image Archive. Directed by Nat Ross, the film follows a World War I veteran who returns home only to find himself confronting the corruption, rumor and small-town bureaucracy that threaten both his reputation and his future. Blending timely social commentary with compelling drama, THE SLANDERERS explores how quickly false accusations can overwhelm truth, a theme that remains remarkably relevant a century after the film was made.

A lively comedy of romance, mistaken identity and theft, the film marks an important turning point in motion picture history, as Griffith and cinematographer G.W. Bitzer completed production while transitioning from Biograph’s legendary New York studio to California, where the American film industry would soon establish its permanent home.

**THE QUARTERBACK, 1926, Dir. Fred C. Newmeyer, 74 Mins, Paramount, USA**

The plot revolves around Jack Stone (Richard Dix), whose father (Harry Beresford) vowed that he would not leave Colton College until his team defeats its archrival, State University. Unfortunately, they lose, year after year after year. Rather than graduate, the father keeps his promise and remains enrolled for the next 27 years. By the 1920s, he is an aging perpetual student attending classes alongside his son Jack, who becomes the school’s new quarterback. Jack must not only win the championship game but also evade attempts by the State team to derail his football success while pursuing a romance with Louise Mason (Esther Ralston).

Based on a story by THE BIG PARADE writer Laurence Stallings, Raoul Walsh’s WHAT PRICE GLORY is the tale of friendly rivals, Captain Flagg (Victor McLaglen) and Sergeant Quirk (Edmund Lowe) who battle each other over women in their travels around the world. Reconnecting in France during WWI, the two compete for Charmaine’s (Dolores Del Rio) love while enduring the cruelties of war. One of the first male buddy films, WHAT PRICE GLORY takes a coarse, unsentimental look at the horrors and chaos of war, timely even today. Director Raoul Walsh and second unit director John Ford demonstrate their eye for composition and strong, male relationships on their road to iconic success.

THE DEVIL’S CIRCUS marks Danish filmmaker Benjamin Christensen’s debut in America. The director of such classics as HAXAN (1922) and SEVEN FOOTSTEPS TO SATAN (1929) weaves his signature thematic motifs around the striking image of a grim, devilish figure pulling the strings of fate. The film tells the gripping story of Mary, played by the radiant Norma Shearer, a naive young woman from the country who is befriended by Carl, a professional pickpocket, played by Charles Emmett Mack. When Mary finds employment in a circus, Carl is arrested but promises to go straight for her sake. However, the corrupt world under the Big Top threatens Mary’s safety and innocence. Despite its breathtaking tragedies, the film is ultimately a deeply moving ode to the redemptive power of love.

Our microcinema is going to the birds with Penny Lane&#8217;s rapturous documentary about everyone&#8217;s favorite escaped zoo owl Flaco &#8211; *Wild Inside*.

In February 2023, a Eurasian Eagle-Owl named Flaco escapes from the Central Park Zoo and sets off on a magical odyssey through the island of Manhattan. Flaco answers the call of the wild – and discovers he was wild inside all along. *Wild Inside* is an underdog story of resilience and self determination as Flaco the Owl beats the odds and accomplishes the impossible. Flaco busts out of his cage barely able to fly, but he adapts, he explores and eventually – it seems – he goes far beyond mere survival, becoming an internationally known icon of freedom, hooting from the highest water towers. He claims all of New York City as his wild kingdom.

The remarkable story of Flaco raises some questions: is it right to keep a bird in a cage? Is there any real distinction between “zoo animals” and “wild animals”? How can we be better to our nonhuman neighbors?

This one of a kind owl’s epic song is sung in *Wild Inside* by a chorus of besotted New Yorkers – young and old, bird-nerds and civilians, many of them immigrants themselves – all of them reaching for a glimpse of the wild, a glimmer of magic, or even just someone to believe in. Dubbed “The Ed Wood of the 21st Century”, Des Plaines, Illinois based former marine and Golden Gloves boxer turned gonzo filmmaker David “The Rock” Nelson has been churning out his bizarre and mesmerizing brand of backyard monster movies for over 30 years. Often playing multiple onscreen roles simultaneously while utilizing local friends, his parents, and his girlfriend Janet Okulanis as his co-stars, “The Rock” has amassed a robust SOV filmography and persevered undaunted in the face nonexistent funds, unfavorable reviews, and outdated video equipment. Nelson’s work represents a singular viewing experience like no other: landing somewhere between the earnest monster romps of Paul Naschy and the eccentric video diaries of George Kuchar; where the filmmakers’ real life day to day activities and interactions sometimes outweigh the forwarding of the narrative. Equipped with dime store rubber fright masks and his camcorder, David “The Rock” Nelson has unapologetically crafted a legacy that remains an inspirational testament to the spirit of fulfilling your cinematic dreams at any cost.

Over 4 1/2 years in the making and clocking in at a staggering 2 1/2 hour runtime, The Devil Ant from 1999 is considered by many to be Nelson's magnum opus and mission statement. When the sardine gobbling mad doctor (Nelson) and his absent minded assistant (also Nelson) dump a pail of nuclear waste into the nearby water supply, an ordinary ant (Nelson’s infamous dime store rubber toy) is transformed into an unstoppable, marauding menace! With Detective Rock (Nelson again) not-so hot on the trail, the radioactive ant (as well as David’s probing camcorder) wreaks havoc on the streets, restaurants, and horror conventions of Illinois as Nelson brazenly flings his rubber ant at unsuspecting civilians, exasperated friends and family members, and confused convention attendees and celebrities. Lew Klahr is a Los Angeles based filmmaker and collage artist who uses found images and sound to explore the pastness of the present where the intersection of memory and history, both personal and cultural, occurs. He began creating his uniquely idiosyncratic films in 1977. These have screened extensively in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Included 3 times in the Whitney Biennial and a Guggenheim Fellow, Lewis Klahr teaches in the Theater School of the California Institute of the Arts.

The film is set on a distant planet called Ygam, where enslaved humans (Oms) are the playthings of giant blue native inhabitants (Draags). After Terr, kept as a pet since infancy, escapes from his gigantic child captor, he is swept up by a band of radical fellow Oms who are resisting the Draags’ oppression and violence. With its eerie, coolly surreal cutout animation by Roland Topor, brilliant psychedelic jazz score by Alain Goraguer and wondrous creatures and landscapes, this Cannes-awarded 1973 counterculture classic is a perennially compelling statement against conformity and violence.

A look at commercial 3-D images created during the silent era. Promotional stereo photographs featured behind the scenes looks at movie stars and productions, such as Lon Chaney in The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Phantom of the Opera. And stereo cards for penny arcade machines featured many silent movie actors including Ben Turpin, Snitz Edwards, and Chaplin impersonator Charles Amador, who performed on screen as Charlie Aplin. Harold Lloyd and Douglas Fairbanks even commissioned their own personal stereo photographs during the filming of their movies. The presentation will also offer the first public exhibition of recently discovered 3-D photos taken on the set of a 1920 western picture.

SCENT OF A WOMAN

A medical mission deep in the Amazon awakens Boiúna, a colossal ancient mythical serpent, sparking a fight for survival.

The film opens with a robed, profusely bleeding "God" disemboweling himself, with the act ultimately ending in his death. A woman, Mother Earth, emerges from his remains, arouses the body, and impregnates herself with his semen. Becoming pregnant, she wanders off into a vast and barren landscape. The pregnancy manifests in a fully grown convulsing man whom she leaves to his own devices.

The "Son of Earth" meets a group of faceless nomads who seize him with what is either a very long umbilical cord or a rope. The Son of Earth vomits organic pieces, and the nomads excitedly accept these as gifts. The nomads finally bring the man to a fire and burn him.

"Mother Earth" encounters the resurrected man and comforts him. She seizes the man with a similar umbilical cord. The nomads appear and proceed to rape her. Son of Earth is left to mourn over the lifeless body. A group of characters appears, carry her off and dismember her, later returning for Son of Earth. After he, too, is dismembered, the group buries the remains, planting the parts into the crust of the earth. The burial site becomes lush with flowers.
