Extremely lyrical yet amoeba-like in form, the first part of the triptych engages the Legend of Rozafa and is told in song, just as the Albanian folktale itself is in. The second part absorbs us into the writings of artist and anthropologist Edith Durham, and appears to us cinematically in book form, just as the writings of Edith are found in. The third part captivates us through video recordings, speaking to us with the immediacy and directness modern stories are told in.

The film plays with our senses, toggling with our consciousness as text itself communicates visually what is simultaneously heard, between linguistic languages we know and linguistic languages we do not speak. The rural and mountaineer landscapes activate various cultural phenomena that spur us into exploring landscapes and non-linearity, merging the lines between known and unknown future(s), past(s), and present(s). three sparks heightens the way our perception thinks about old laws, traditional gender relations, and various ways our presence as filmmakers and human beings is felt while making, and viewing, bodies full of world.

This joyful night of music features a live 18-piece band, all-star vocalists, community choirs, and multimedia storytelling that highlights the resilience of Altadena and Pasadena’s Black community. Featuring powerful arrangements of crowd-favorite songs from Motor City, soul and gospel, including holiday classics, this night will touch your heart and send your spirit soaring. 

Why is this so important now? Historically Black communities, especially in Altadena and Pasadena, were hit particularly hard by the Eaton Fire, and this is their first holiday season since the fires. These neighborhoods, once places of promise and opportunity for middle-class Black families unable to purchase homes in other parts of Los Angeles are now sites of immense loss. Homes passed down from generation to generation – part of family legacies – have been destroyed, and places of gathering, such as schools, churches and parks, have been hit hard. But while the structures may be gone, the power of community remains.

Help make this night a turning point for hundreds of families. Your attendance directly supports community recovery, resilience, and renewal.

The program brings together work by artists from across the Middle East and North Africa who, like Al Summary, embrace the medium of film as a form of documentation, resistance, remembering, and imagination and a tool by which to cross the boundaries and borders that might otherwise keep us apart. 

Films will be screened throughout the day from **11am to 5pm**. Starting at **6pm**, the full program will be presented, followed by a conversation between Al Summary and ICA LA Senior Curator, Amanda Sroka.

Lightstruck invites you to celebrate the weary winter months of the impending holiday season with us as best as we know how, through the all-seeing, all-knowing, all-smelling video camera of George Kuchar. Like an untended litter box, George’s enormous body of video work is strewn with festive nuggets of every kind, but it is wintertime and Christmas that seem to receive the most fervent attention. Themes of family, friends, food, firesides, kitsch, ritual, embarrassment, guilt, and indigestion comprise the perfect ingredients for one of our all-time favorite filmmaker’s magnetic, diaristic gaze, as he approaches the holiday season with love, tenderness, humor, and horror.

Lightstruck is thrilled to present a selection of four of our favorite George Kuchar holiday videos, combining like mulled wine to give you a warm tingling sensation followed the next morning by a headache and maybe a little agita. In *Frigid Escapades*, George visits Gene Youngblood in Santa Fe but makes it back to the Bay Area in time for dinner with Lawrence Jordan and Joanna McClure. In *Migration of the Blubberoids*, a wintery visit to mom in The Bronx is an occasion for tensions to ferment over ring cake from Artuso Pastry Shop. *Xmas 1986* is an emotional epic centered around family and community, with a moving visit to dying friend Curt McDowell forming the centerpiece of one of George’s greatest mixes of the comic, tragic, and eccentric. Our holiday evening will close with the unsurpassably entitled *Fill Thy Crack With Whiteness*, a music-driven montage with plenty of laughs, various Xmas gatherings, and groans of yuletide cheer to send us all stumbling out into the eternally snowless Los Angeles night.
