*A dream of dark and troubling things . . .*

Tonight we honor the late, great **David Lynch** (on what would have been the director’s 80th birthday) by screening his first feature *Eraserhead* on 35mm, alongside Suzan Pitt’s experimental animated short film *Asparagus*.

Originally programmed together by film producer and distributor **Ben Barenholtz** (considered the father of the midnight movie), the two films played together for nearly two years at the Waverly Theater in New York City and the Nuart Theatre in Los Angeles.

Both films, unique in their visionary artistry, vividly bring to life rich and twisted psycho-sexual interior worlds. The enduring midnight screenings of *Eraserhead* from the late ’70s through early ’80s quickly cemented David Lynch as a cult icon, and eventually launched his film career by bringing his vision into the mainstream.

Curated together by Rotations’ Corina Copp, JOAN’s Suzy Halajian, and artist Alexis Kyle Mitchell, this two-night screening and reading program commemorates the final days of Mitchell’s exhibition *The Goal of Our Health*, on view at JOAN through January 31. *Events for a Moving Body* brings together films and readings that think with the body as a site of knowledge, relation, and struggle. Spanning archival and contemporary experimental, ethnographic, and transnational queer, feminist and artist cinema practices, these works reflect on athleticism, performance, hysteria, spirit, and human–animal ecologies; extending Mitchell’s inquiry into how embodied knowledge resists the limits imposed on bodies by medical, economic, social, and ideological structures.

Mitchell’s JOAN exhibition marks the Los Angeles premiere of her 2024 feature-length film *The Treasury of Human Inheritance*, which explores the idea of inheritance as a genetic, political, and spiritual set of relations; and includes newly commissioned works that unearth a history and aesthetics of fascist and eugenicist logics and practices. Deeply informed by his close connections to Chile’s unfolding history, Francisco is the son of Orlando Letelier, who was minister of Defense in Salvador Allende’s Chilean government in 1973. Imprisoned, tortured, and then exiled to Washington, D.C., Orlando was murdered by the Augusto Pinochet government in 1976 in Sheridan Circle when Francisco was 16. As an artist based in Venice, California, Francisco is an important member of the local and national Chilean community. His work celebrates his country’s traditions of political muralism and serves as both a form of memory and an act of resistance.

While making a small accessories pouch, learn the basics of working with leather. This will cover different types of leather, terms and tools for working with chrome tanned pieces. This is a hands class on with sharp tools and Sharpies and is intended for beginners 14 years and older. Leave the class with a new appreciation for leather and take home a small finished pouch and a pattern to make more if you fall in love with the craft!

For Maria de Medeiros’s first film role, in which she disguises herself as a male knight to live and love freely without the interference of a dangerous suitor, João César Monteiro created a theatrical representation of medieval life, complete with mythical creatures and painted and front-projected backdrops. Taking inspiration from the story of Bluebeard and Portuguese fables, SILVESTRE is a radical take on the historical film, and one of the best examples in Portuguese cinema of the confluence between reality and fantasy. Premiered at the Venice Film Festival, the film established Monteiro as one of the most original voices of his generation.
