Our January session will focus on honoring the life and work of Nigerian L.A. Rebellion filmmaker, painter, and author Ijeoma IIoputaife (1951–2025), also known as Omah Diegu, along with conversations and new work from Nigerian-British artist and director Jenn Nkiru.

**Ijeoma IIoputaife** (1951-2025), also known as Omah Diegu and ‘oma ‘taife, was a Ghana-born Nigerian filmmaker, painter and author. The first African woman to study film at UCLA, she was part of the second generation of the Los Angeles School of Black Filmmakers, also called L.A. Rebellion. Today, her short film *African Women, U.S.A *(1980) is one of the standard works of feminist African-American cinema. After returning to Nigeria, she lived in Germany for a while which led to the autobiographical documentary *The Snake in my Bed* (1995) made in collaboration with Das kleine Fernsehspiel.

**Jenn Nkiru** is a Nigerian-British Grammy Award–winning artist and director from London. Her works have been screened internationally at venues including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Tate Modern, the ICA, London, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane.

Wealthy housewife and children’s author Cathryn (Susannah York) receives a series of disturbing and eerie phone calls in her home in London one dreary night. The female voice on the other end suggests mockingly to her that her husband Hugh (René Auberjonois) is having an affair. Cathryn’s husband comes home, finding her in complete disarray. Hugh attempts to comfort her, but then he is gone, and she sees a different man who is behaving as if he were her husband. She screams in horror and backs away, only to see her vision of the figure revert to her husband.

Hugh attributes her outburst to stress and her budding pregnancy. He decides to take a vacation to the countryside at an isolated cottage. But as she dwells there, Cathryn delves into darker delusions as the stranger returns, and she finds it difficult to determine what is reality and what is in her mind.

Curated together by Rotations’ Corina Copp, JOAN’s Suzy Halajian, and artist Alexis Kyle Mitchell, this two-night screening and reading program commemorates the final days of Mitchell’s exhibition *The Goal of Our Health*, on view at JOAN through January 31. *Events for a Moving Body* brings together films and readings that think with the body as a site of knowledge, relation, and struggle. Spanning archival and contemporary experimental, ethnographic, and transnational queer, feminist and artist cinema practices, these works reflect on athleticism, performance, hysteria, spirit, and human–animal ecologies; extending Mitchell’s inquiry into how embodied knowledge resists the limits imposed on bodies by medical, economic, social, and ideological structures.

Mitchell’s JOAN exhibition marks the Los Angeles premiere of her 2024 feature-length film *The Treasury of Human Inheritance*, which explores the idea of inheritance as a genetic, political, and spiritual set of relations; and includes newly commissioned works that unearth a history and aesthetics of fascist and eugenicist logics and practices. In dialogue, *Events for a Moving Body* constellates transtemporal moving images that bring into view the body in its sensorial labors—Jacqui Duckworth, Julie Dash, Peter Weiss, Margaret Raspé—with anachronistic works by artists Onyeka Igwe, Yelena Gluzman, Sarah Ballard, and Mary Helena Clark, among others, that immerse us newly.

How have bodies historically navigated constraint through collectivity, ritual, repetition, and shared forms of attention? Invited poets and scholars Danielle Carr, Amelia Bande, and others will read in and around the film-work, together proposing the body as something not merely acted upon. Instead, histories are embodied, memory flows multidirectionally, and new forms emerge for health, care, and desire outside capitalist and imperialist frameworks.
