Located on the Pacific Rim, LACMA is the largest art museum in the western United States, with a collection of more than 150,000 objects that illuminate 6,000 years of artistic expression across the globe. Committed to showcasing a multitude of art histories, LACMA exhibits and interprets works of art from new and unexpected points of view that are informed by the region’s rich cultural heritage and diverse population. LACMA’s spirit of experimentation is reflected in its work with artists, technologists, and thought leaders as well as in its regional, national, and global partnerships to share collections and programs, create pioneering initiatives, and engage new audiences.

Designed to evoke the type of mid-century cinema where the films that inspired Youssef Nabil’s art were shown, this exhibition showcases the artist’s 2015 video *I Saved My Belly Dancer*, a recent LACMA acquisition. It also features 11 related photographs that parallel the filmic storyline, along with contemporaneous Egyptian film posters. Like much of Nabil’s work, the subject matter is subtly autobiographical and reflects his longing for the past, one that he lived vicariously through the old movies he watched obsessively on television while growing up in Cairo. Tahar Rahim performs as the artist’s alter ego and the belly dancer is played by Salma Hayek. The video and photographs have a dream-like, otherworldly quality further delineated by the unearthly intensity and tonality of the color palette, which the artist hand-painted on silver gelatin prints and colorized frame by frame with concentrated, supersaturated hues.

The Mount Wilson Observatory is an astronomical observatory in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The MWO is located on Mount Wilson, a 5,710-foot peak in the San Gabriel Mountains near Pasadena, northeast of Los Angeles.

#### Our popular Public Ticket Nights allow individuals, rather than just groups, to experience the thrill of viewing celestial objects through our large, historic telescopes, the 60 and 100 inch telescopes–the two largest in the world dedicated to public viewing.

Join a small group of individuals to observe the stars through the largest telescope in the world available to the public, the historic telescope that astronomer Edwin Hubble used to prove the existence of other galaxies and that our Universe is expanding. The group is limited to just 16 people, so you will have the opportunity to see many objects through this amazing instrument. Tickets are limited to four per registrant.

The telescope sessions are guided by an experienced telescope operator and session director, both with a thorough knowledge of the best objects to observe and the history of the Observatory, to enhance your experience. You are invited to bring any food and non-alcoholic drinks you wish. Coffee, tea, and hot chocolate are provided. Please bring extra warm clothing, as it is usually cooler on the mountain than down in the valley. Come up and share a spectacular night of astronomy with other space enthusiasts. Segar (and less on the animated cartoons created by Max Fleischer, which were decidedly different in tone and approach), POPEYE follows the sailor man with the mighty arms (played by Robin Williams in his first major film role) as he arrives in the seaside community of Sweethaven in search of his long-lost father. Popeye meets and quickly falls for the slender Olive Oyl (Shelley Duvall, in the role she was born to play), but Olive’s hand has already been promised to the hulking Bluto (Paul Smith), of whom Olive can say little except, well, he’s large. Eventually, Popeye and Olive are brought together by Swee’ Pea (Wesley Ivan Hurt), an adorable foundling, and Popeye finally meets his dad, Poopdeck Pappy (Ray Walston). Director Robert Altman in no way tempered his trademark style for this big-budget family opus, crowding the screen with a variety of characters and allowing his cast to overlap as much dialogue as they want.

A Mexican-American teenager dreams of graduating high school, when increased ICE raids in her community threaten to separate her family and force her to become the breadwinner for her family. Ashley Solis is a high school senior who must divide her time between school and supporting her family as a second-generation Mexican American. Located in a California working class town, the harshness of agricultural labor in the strawberry fields shares a stark contrast with the beautiful nature and relationship to her spiritual ancestral upbringing. Director Emily Cohen Ibáñez documents Ashley’s life guided by the spirit world through her hardships and joys in modern America.

In extraordinary dual performances, Michelle A. Banks and John Earl Jelks play Malindy and Arthur, a couple in 1910 Chicago, as well as Malaika and Nico, a couple living in the same city almost eighty years later. Their stories are deftly interwoven through the creative use of archival photography, an original score featuring ragtime and African percussion, and an editing style both lyrical and tender. Malindy, an industrious, intelligent dressmaker, falls for Arthur, an illiterate migrant from Mississippi, along the shore of Lake Michigan. Lightstruck presents PASSING THROUGH: A Film by Larry Clark.

A singular work of independent cinematic expression, Larry Clark’s 16mm feature *Passing Through* (1977) is a film inspired by and intertwined with the history, culture, and language of jazz as an African-American art form. In its dynamic structure, deep humanism, and bold experimentation, Clark’s filmmaking seems to embody and channel the very essence of American jazz as a fundamental Black art, an ecology of African-American identity and history that defies white cultural hegemony through struggle, resistance, collectivity, and creativity. The result is a massively self-assured and radically independent work of integral vision, embodied by both Clark and his collaborating crew, which included filmmakers Julie Dash and Charles Burnett.

Dedicated “to Herbert Baker and other Black Musicians known and unknown,” the film follows Eddie Warmack (Nathaniel Taylor), a jazz musician recently released from prison, as he navigates a Los Angeles revealed as site of both community liberation and the ongoing violence of exploitation. The film’s daring and experimental visual language palpably expresses a heightened subjectivity and emotionality, as well as proposing a radical formal style that challenges the predictable cinematic grammar of much commercial cinema. Featuring music from Horace Tapscott and the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, Clark’s film charts a sharply rendered and deep-hearted journey for its protagonist as he passes through the realm of the mythic while also remaining grounded in vivid reality.

In keeping with Clark’s ideological motivations, *Passing Through* is intended for viewing only in a communal theatrical setting, where its resonant energy and ideas can best communicate with and engage the assembled audience. **The Holy Mountain score:**

The soundtrack for Alejandro Jodorowsky’s 1973 surrealist masterpiece, The Holy Mountain, was composed by Jodorowsky himself, the late Ron Frangipane and jazz trumpeter Don Cherry. Ron turned Jodorowsky’s melodic fragments into orchestral arrangements and Don improvised music as the film was projected in silence &#8211; with a group reported to have been more than 100 musicians! Although the film only features synthesizer in a specific segment (track 17, entitled “F*ck Machine”), given the period in which the film was released, the utilization of the synthesizer underscores its emerging significance in the world of music and film scoring. After all, commercial synthesizers were only released five years prior to the film&#8217;s making.

The film was produced by the Beatles’ manager Allen Klein of ABKCO Music and was funded by John Lennon and Yoko Ono after they fell in love with Jodorowsky’s previous film, *El Topo*.

Mythscience & 2220 Arts present the West Coast premiere of *Sun Ra: Do the Impossible*, the new documentary by director Christine Turner. After the screening, former Arkestra dancer Cheryl Banks-Smith and filmmaker Christine Turner will join Harmony Holiday for a conversation about the film and the Arkestra's music legacy.

Poet, Egyptolotist, cosmologist, historian, activist, bandleader, musician… jazz pioneer Sun Ra was all of these. In this illuminating biography, Christine Turner takes us on a complex journey through the life of a complex man who either was born in Birmingham, Alabama, sent from Saturn, or both. With his band the Arkestra he extended the boundaries of free-form jazz, put his own mark on the standards, pursued forays into electronic music, yet could be just as inspired to riff on “Over the Rainbow.” His musical mission also was rooted as an agent toward advancing Afrofuturism, mixing interstellar metaphors (“space is the place”) and his own scientific explanations (“transmolecularization”) with the state of Black life in America.

Turner gracefully balances recollections from the Arkestra’s devout, still-in-awe band members and dancers, comments from big-fan historians, scholars and other musicians, and the musings of Sun Ra himself with unforgettable performance footage and scenes from a self-produced film to paint a portrait — informative, enriching and at times mind-blowing — of a man who was as much a visionary as a he was a musician.

Based on the acclaimed memoir *One Train Later* by rock guitarist Andy Summers, CAN’T STAND LOSING YOU: SURVIVING THE POLICE follows Summers’ journey from his early days in the psychedelic ‘60s music scene, when he played with The Animals, to chance encounters with drummer Stewart Copeland and bassist Sting, which led to the formation of a punk trio, The Police. During the band’s phenomenal rise and its dissolution at the height of their popularity in the mid-’80s, Summers captured history with his candid photographs. Utilizing rare archival footage and insights from the guitarist’s side of the stage, CAN’T STAND LOSING YOU: SURVIVING THE POLICE brings together past and present as the band members reunite, more than two decades later, for a global reunion tour in 2007.
