*D’Est en Musique* presents Chantal Akerman’s semi-fictional travelogue in a musical collaboration with her partner, celebrated cellist Sonia Wieder-Atherton, performed live by Wieder-Atherton and award-winning pianist Sarah Rothenberg. Akerman’s 16mm film, first shown in 1993, was shot in Poland, Ukraine, East Germany, and Russia amidst the unstable period following the collapse of the Eastern Bloc. Observing landscapes and people, the poignant film evokes an uneasy malaise through long, extended shots and looping repetition. Akerman re-edited the film in 2005 and paired it with musical selections by Wieder-Atherton that include masterworks by composers including Béla Bartók, Frédéric Chopin, Leoš Janáček, Bohuslav Martinů, Sergei Prokofiev, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Maurice Ravel, Alfred Schnittke, and Boris Tchaikovsky. A found footage appropriation from filmmaker Aristotelis Maragkos, THE TIMEKEEPERS OF ETERNITY was meticulously crafted by creating a new edit of Stephen King's TV mini-series THE LANGOLIERS, printing each frame to paper, then animating it all into a brand new creature feature. But there's a method to the madness. In THE LANGOLIERS, Mr. Toomey (played by an unhinged Bronson Pinchot) obsessively tears paper to overcome the traumatic events—and literal monsters—of his childhood. In TIMEKEEPERS, the tears and creases of photocopied paper transform into a living collage where the filmmaker and protagonist slowly merge with a common goal: to make sense of the paper nightmare. For their first event of 2026, Lightstruck is extremely excited to present a double feature of programs from one of their very favorite artists and individuals, Fred Worden. Since 1970, Worden has produced a wide range of experimental filmmaking in the purest sense of that term - his work engages in deeply thoughtful, endlessly exploratory investigations into the ecstatic adventure of primal perception and optical phenomena that are unique (elemental, even) to motion pictures. Probing the thrillingly audacious adventure of sight with his keen and playful sensibility, Worden has produced a career’s worth of magical filmmaking that, in his words, “tries hard to up the ante on the notion that film is a visual rather than literary art and that seeing as a perceptual process precedes and models thought.”

Longtime friend Ken Jacobs once stated that Worden’s work “loosens the brains good”, and we're not sure we can top that description. Many of Worden’s films thrive in a vast and cosmic space of pure experience, and beyond language, which makes them exceedingly hard to describe. But for any enthusiast of the fundamentals of cinema and the absolutely, irreducibly elemental psychedelia (if you will) of visual perception, Worden’s films are crucial documents. Our two-program overview of Worden’s world will consist of diverse 16mm and digital works produced over a nearly forty year career of lovingly nudging eyeballs and brains toward vistas of the infinite, and including his 1998 16mm film One, in which Worden manages to extrapolate a 20-minute-long cosmos from literally one frame of source imagery.

This subversively poetic, scandalously perverse sexual comedy earned João César Monteiro a Silver Lion at the 1995 Venice Film Festival. The unofficial sequel to RECOLLECTIONS OF THE YELLOW HOUSE brings João de Deus (Monteiro) back as the assistant manager of a Lisbon ice cream shop owned by an ex-prostitute (a sublime Manuela de Freitas), where the young employees awaken his depraved impulses. GOD’S COMEDY is staggering in its celestial use of natural light and exquisite dialog, and disturbing for the repulsive behavior of a character who sees heaven and hell in all living things and refuses to obey a corrupt social contract and its clerical bodies, yet ultimately epitomizes its sins. Through João de Deus’s combination of sacred (he is enraptured by Camões, Wagner and Haydn) and the profane (he keeps a personal bible of pubic hair, and Queen Victoria’s is its most prized entry), Monteiro exposes the amoral perversity of being alive in a nefarious, cruel world.

Cinema’s First Nasty Women returns to the Billy Wilder Theater! Its name a riff on the feminist cri de cœur that arose during the 2016 presidential election, Cinema’s First Nasty Women is an ongoing, curated project to rediscover and revel in the anarchic spirit of women comedians who brought a rebellious energy to the early silent screen. Organized by an international team of film archivists and scholars, Maggie Hennefeld, Laura Horak and Elif Rongen-Kaynakçi, this new travelling program of restored titles from the project comes with a special twist. Archival collections can inspire new research which in turn helps grow new audiences, but they can also inspire new films. Based in Australia, with The Physical TV Company, filmmaker and author Karen Pearlman has built a feminist film practice that puts cinema’s past and present in dialogue in brilliantly constructed, canon-busting short film essays. For “Cinema’s First Nasty Women: Breaking Plates and Smashing the Patriarchy,” Pearlman drew on the project's images and energy for her latest short, *Breaking Plates*. The Archive is thrilled to have Pearlman as our guest at the Billy Wilder Theater with a selection of her work along with the Los Angeles premiere of *Breaking Plates* and the silent slapstick female performers that inspired it.

Tsai Ming-liang emerged on the world cinema scene in 1992 with his groundbreaking first feature, ***Rebels of the Neon God***. His debut already includes a handful of elements familiar to fans of subsequent work: a deceptively spare style often branded “minimalist”; actor Lee Kang-sheng as the silent and sullen Hsiao-kang; copious amounts of water, whether pouring from the sky or bubbling up from a clogged drain; and enough urban anomie to ensure that even the subtle humor in evidence is tinged with pathos. The loosely structured plot involves Hsiao-kang, a despondent cram school student, who becomes obsessed with young petty thief Ah-tze, after Ah-tze smashes the rearview mirror of a taxi driven by Hsiao-kang’s father. Hsiao-kang stalks Ah-tze and his buddy Ah-ping as they hang out in the film’s iconic arcade (featuring a telling poster of James Dean on the wall) and other locales around Taipei, and ultimately takes his revenge. ***Rebels of the Neon God*** is a remarkably impressive first film that hints at the promise of its director: a talent confirmed by Tsai’s equally stunning second feature, *Vive L’Amour* (Golden Lion, Venice), and continuing to his most recent film, *Stray Dogs*, which ranked high on many “best of” lists last year. A landmark of Black and American independent cinema that would send shock waves through the culture, SWEET SWEETBACK’S BAADASSSSS SONG was Melvin Van Peebles’s second feature film, after he walked away from a contract with Columbia in order to make his next film on his own terms. Acting as producer, director, writer, composer, editor, and star, Van Peebles created the prototype for what Hollywood would eventually co-opt and make into the blaxploitation hero: a taciturn, perpetually blank-faced performer in a sex show, who, when he’s pushed too far by a pair of racist cops looking to frame him for a crime he didn’t commit, goes on the run through a lawless underground of bikers, revolutionaries, sex workers, and hippies in a kill-or-be-killed quest for liberation from white oppression. SWEET SWEETBACK’S BAADASSSSS SONG’s incendiary politics are matched by Van Peebles’s revolutionary style, in which jagged jump cuts, kaleidoscopic superimpositions, and psychedelic sound design come together in a sustained howl of rage and defiance.

### **ABOUT THE FILM:**

Wealthy housewife and children’s author Cathryn (Susannah York) receives a series of disturbing and eerie phone calls in her home in London one dreary night. The female voice on the other end suggests mockingly to her that her husband Hugh (René Auberjonois) is having an affair. Cathryn’s husband comes home, finding her in complete disarray. Hugh attempts to comfort her, but then he is gone, and she sees a different man who is behaving as if he were her husband. She screams in horror and backs away, only to see her vision of the figure revert to her husband.

Hugh attributes her outburst to stress and her budding pregnancy. He decides to take a vacation to the countryside at an isolated cottage. But as she dwells there, Cathryn delves into darker delusions as the stranger returns, and she finds it difficult to determine what is reality and what is in her mind.
