*Place Is the Space *is a four-hour immersive performance experience combining live jazz improvisation, theatrical storytelling and multimedia design inspired by Sun Ra’s philosophy and his film *Space Is the Place*. The work functions as both a concert and an experiential ritual where musicians, performers, visual elements and audience members collectively shape the space into a place. Metaphorically building the vehicle that Sun Ra aspired towards, expressing Afrofuturistic themes of transcendence, liberation and joy.

This cosmic jam session culminates in the audience crowning a "New Sun Ra," who leads the full audience on a pilgrimage to the Hammer Museum for one final performance, where everyone is invited to play along.

Presented in conjunction with the Hammer Museum’s current exhibition *SPACE IS THE PLACE*, which frames “space” as a conceptual framework inspired by the works and views of experimental jazz artist Sun Ra.

As part of Whammy’s SOV September, The Philosophical Research Society’s 7th House Screenings & LA Filmforum are proud to present a rare theatrical screening of STRANDED IN CANTON (1974/2005), quintessential American photographer William Eggleston’s mesmerizing, unruly and disarmingly intimate lone foray into filmmaking. Armed with a then-new Sony Porta-Pak, Eggleston spent 1974 plunging headlong into the bars, back rooms and back roads of Memphis, New Orleans and the Mississippi Delta. Friends, family, artists, musicians, night owls and assorted eccentrics drift in and out of view, caught amid the boozy, volatile, freewheeling energy of the ’70s South. Nearly thirty years later, Eggleston and filmmaker Robert Gordon fashioned the long-unseen footage into a strange, hypnotic portrait of a vanished Southern world.

In place of the blazing color and immaculate, observational compositions of his iconic photographs, Eggleston gives us wobbly, ghostly, grain-clouded black-and-white video: faces emerge from pitch darkness, the camera pushes within inches of its subjects as drunken monologues, musical performances, eruptions of violence and moments of unexpected tenderness careen around it. The same eye that transformed the everyday American South into some of the most indelible photographs of the last century is unmistakably present, but here everything moves, talks back and threatens to spill out of the frame. Among those caught in its orbit are blues legend Furry Lewis and Big Star’s Alex Chilton, filmed amid the same Memphis scene that gave rise to the band—and in the very year Eggleston’s The Red Ceiling appeared on the cover of their sophomore album Radio City. Decades later, the film so captivated Spiritualized’s J Spaceman and John Coxon that they composed an original score for it in 2015. (Note: this screening features the film’s original soundtrack, not the Spaceman/Coxon score.)

Douglas Fairbanks reaches the height of his swashbuckling career in THE BLACK PIRATE (1926), one of silent cinema’s most spectacular adventure films. Produced at the peak of Fairbanks’ international popularity, the film follows a daring nobleman who infiltrates a band of pirates to avenge his father’s murder, leading to a succession of breathtaking action sequences staged with Fairbanks’ trademark athleticism and charm.

Equally remarkable is the film’s groundbreaking use of two-strip Technicolor. One of the earliest feature films photographed entirely in the process, THE. BLACK PIRATE demonstrated that color cinematography could become an integral part of dramatic storytelling rather than a novelty. ### **ABOUT THE FILM:**

Directed by Roland West from the enormously successful Broadway play by Mary Roberts Rinehart and Avery Hopwood, THE BAT (1926) helped define the “old dark house” mystery long before it became a Hollywood staple. A mysterious masked criminal known only as “The Bat” stalks the corridors of an isolated mansion where hidden wealth, suspicious houseguests, secret passageways and unexpected murders keep audiences guessing until the final moments.

West directs with extraordinary visual flair, using expressive lighting, elaborate camera movement and striking Art Deco-inspired production design to create an atmosphere of mounting suspense. The film’s shadow-filled imagery would prove enormously influential on later horror and mystery films, while its combination of suspense and humor established a formula that filmmakers would revisit for decades.

Presented in the West Coast premiere of a new restoration during its centennial year, THE BAT remains one of silent cinema’s most stylish and entertaining mysteries, a masterfully crafted thriller whose influence can still be felt throughout the genre today.

Our microcinema is going to the birds with Penny Lane&#8217;s rapturous documentary about everyone&#8217;s favorite escaped zoo owl Flaco &#8211; *Wild Inside*.

In February 2023, a Eurasian Eagle-Owl named Flaco escapes from the Central Park Zoo and sets off on a magical odyssey through the island of Manhattan. Flaco answers the call of the wild – and discovers he was wild inside all along. *Wild Inside* is an underdog story of resilience and self determination as Flaco the Owl beats the odds and accomplishes the impossible. Flaco busts out of his cage barely able to fly, but he adapts, he explores and eventually – it seems – he goes far beyond mere survival, becoming an internationally known icon of freedom, hooting from the highest water towers. He claims all of New York City as his wild kingdom.

The remarkable story of Flaco raises some questions: is it right to keep a bird in a cage? Is there any real distinction between “zoo animals” and “wild animals”? How can we be better to our nonhuman neighbors?

This one of a kind owl’s epic song is sung in *Wild Inside* by a chorus of besotted New Yorkers – young and old, bird-nerds and civilians, many of them immigrants themselves – all of them reaching for a glimpse of the wild, a glimmer of magic, or even just someone to believe in. Everywhere Flaco goes, he leaves that place and its people forever enchanted.

Jason is back for vengeance in the most sprawling and substantial of Bryan Fortin’s original Zones of Evil productions! Growing out of the 1980s fanzine and cable access program of the same name, Peabody, MA-based Fortin and collaborators Jim Demers and Steven Mallas (comprising FDM productions) produced a score of feature-length projects that never aired outside of Cablevision. Though their meditative *Happy Halloween* series is better known, *Jason’s Curse* is a more concise endeavor, full of atmospheric locations, impressive night-lensed chase scenes,and plenty of inventive kills.

Fortin plays Rick, who, alongside his friend David (Brian Less), confronts Jason’s past killing spree that landed his sister in an asylum. As with other FDM productions, a lot of time is spent in Fortin’s house (standing in for a cabin) as he discusses the plot details and his character’s history, while a series of bloody kills occur outside. These moments are imbued with quiet charm in Bryan’s world, proving that he and his team created the peak of cable access programming experience. Despite the fact that there are rarely more than two people onscreen at one time, Fortin manages to transcend the sophomoric fan film heap and deliver a perfect bit of seasonal fun. Sam Neill is Smith, a man escaping the break-up of his marriage by finding isolation on a coastal island. As he settles in, the country experiences its own turmoil: an oil embargo has led to martial law and civil war, which Smith is increasingly sucked into. 

This was the first feature film for both Sam Neill and filmmaker Roger Donaldson, as well as the first feature length film in color to be shot in New Zealand.

During a blackout in a Manhattan skyscraper, accountant David Stillwell (Gregory Peck) descends a darkened staircase and encounters a mysterious woman (Diane Baker) who seems to know him. Then he learns a prominent philanthropist has fallen to his death… strangers begin hunting him… and Stillwell realizes he can’t remember the last two years of his life. Desperate for answers, he hires a wisecracking private detective (Walter Matthau) to help untangle the mystery—but the deeper they dig, the more danger they find. Stylish and atmospheric with a paranoid edge, Mirage blends noir-like suspense and comedy into a disorienting thriller that keeps us questioning what is real. After spending 20 years in a psychiatric institution for the brutal axe murders of her husband and his mistress, Lucy Harbin (Joan Crawford) is finally released into the care of her daughter, Carol (Diane Baker). Returning to a life she barely recognizes proves unsettling enough, but when a series of grisly murders begins, old suspicions and new fears quickly surface. Produced and directed by William Castle from a screenplay by Psycho novelist Robert Bloch, Strait-Jacket is a deliciously lurid blend of psychological suspense, gothic horror, and dark humor, with Crawford commanding the screen as a woman whose grip on reality may be slipping once again. Castle surrounds Crawford and Baker with a colorful supporting cast, including George Kennedy, Leif Erickson, and Rochelle Hudson, while milking the story for shocks and sinister surprises. Strait-Jacket is vintage Castle: stylish, campy, and macabre.

**“Help Yourself,” 1927, Dir. Joe Pasternak, 20 Mins, Dino Everett/USC, USA**

Long believed lost, “Help Yourself” (1927) stars Swedish-born comedian El Brendel as a hungry drifter whose search for a meal unexpectedly leads to romance. Produced by future Hollywood legends Joe Pasternak and William R. Wilkerson before either achieved fame, the film was never released, and its negative was eventually destroyed. Surviving elements, discovered more than ninety years later, have now been painstakingly reconstructed by USC HMH Foundation Moving Image Archive Curator Dino Everett and film collector Louie Despres, making this screening the first opportunity in nearly a century to experience this forgotten comedy.

**THE SLANDERERS, 1924, Dir. Nat Ross, 60 Mins, Dino Everett/USC, USA**

The world premiere restoration of THE SLANDERERS (1924), a previously lost feature preserved from the only known surviving copy, a 16mm print recently discovered in the USC HMH Foundation Moving Image Archive. Directed by Nat Ross, the film follows a World War I veteran who returns home only to find himself confronting the corruption, rumor and small-town bureaucracy that threaten both his reputation and his future. Blending timely social commentary with compelling drama, THE SLANDERERS explores how quickly false accusations can overwhelm truth, a theme that remains remarkably relevant a century after the film was made.
